Designed for demanding high-voltage circuits requiring controlled current limiting, pulse-energy handling, and reliable component protection, this non-inductive 30kV, 50W High Voltage Resistor is available in values from 1kΩ to 100kΩ. Typical applications include ballast resistance, capacitor charging and discharge, pulse damping, surge-current limiting, load testing, arc suppression, and protection of MOSFET switches and other high-voltage components.
A robust glass glaze resistive element provides stable performance under demanding electrical conditions. Its low-inductance, low-parasitic construction helps reduce ringing, voltage overshoot, and waveform distortion compared with conventional wirewound resistors, making it particularly suitable for pulse generators, capacitor banks, semiconductor switching circuits, spark-gap systems, and laboratory HV equipment.
The 1kΩ to 100kΩ resistance range is intended primarily for current limiting and controlled energy dissipation rather than high-impedance measurement. Lower values allow greater pulse current and are useful as ballast resistors in capacitor discharge circuits, plasma systems, pulsed electric field equipment, and stacked MOSFET switch setups. Higher values provide stronger current restriction, slower capacitor discharge, reduced loading, and improved protection for sensitive components.
When installed in series with a MOSFET switch, stacked semiconductor switch, spark gap, or other pulsed load, the resistor can limit peak current and reduce electrical stress on the switching device. The correct resistance should be selected from the applied voltage, desired peak current, pulse duration, repetition rate, and safe operating limits of every component in the circuit.
The stated 50W rating refers to the permitted average or continuous power dissipation under the specified operating conditions. During short pulses, the resistor may withstand instantaneous power levels many times higher—potentially several tens of times the average rating—depending on pulse duration, repetition rate, duty cycle, pulse energy, cooling, and the applicable pulse-load limits. Average power and repetitive pulse energy must always remain within the permitted specifications.
Unlike the average power rating, the 30kV maximum voltage rating is an absolute limit and must not be exceeded, even during brief pulses. The applied voltage must also remain below the level permitted by the selected resistance and average power dissipation, calculated using P = V²/R. Because of the relatively low resistance values, the 50W average-power limit will normally be reached at a voltage far below 30kV during continuous operation.
In capacitor-based systems, the resistor can limit charging current, control discharge current, reduce stress on rectifiers and semiconductor switches, or shape the current pulse delivered to a load. It may also be used for transient damping, output loading, surge suppression, and controlled dissipation of stored electrical energy.
Typical applications include high-voltage pulse generators, plasma equipment, capacitor discharge systems, pulsed electric field experiments, insulation testing, spark-gap circuits, pulse modulators, X-ray equipment, scientific instruments, MOSFET switching systems, and high-voltage power-supply testing.
