Performance Tips: For optimal results, use burst mode on your function generator. Configure it to 3–5 cycles with a burst repetition rate of 300–1000 μs at the resonance frequency of the transformer. This prevents the electric arc from getting 'stuck' on the rods, ensuring it moves smoothly and continuously upward.
In the video shown on this page, we used our 350V Half-Bridge amplifier running at around 220V input together with the 25kV AC Flyback Transformer. This is why the arc appears so bright and stable in the demonstration. Please note that using the DC Flyback Transformer for this setup is not recommended, as it does not perform well in this application. However, if you wish to use DC, our High Voltage DC Power Supplies (30kV and above) are compatible with the Jacob’s Ladder kit. Keep in mind that when using HV DC power supplies, you cannot utilize burst mode like you can with a function generator, so you may experience that the arc tends to stick more to the rods instead of climbing as smoothly as with the Half-Bridge setup.

- The stainless steel rods can become extremely hot after operation. Allow sufficient cooling time between runs to prevent damage or injury.
